During the untimely morning hours on November 20, 1969 seventy eight American Indians traveled by boat through the San Francisco Bay to the tattered Alcatraz Island that was once home to one of the most famous penitentiaries in America. These brave seventy-eight set out occupy the accustomed prison with aspirations of creating an American Indian cultural center amidst the crumbling, vacant, and plain uninhabitable former prison.
